From the NY Times, apparently it is dangerous to text while driving.  According to a study by the Virginia Tech Transit Institute the risk of getting into an accident increases by 23%.  They also found that the average time someone looks at their phone while driving to text is 5 seconds.

Personally, I find this painstakingly obvious as its damn near impossible for me to drive and text at the same time.  Maybe I suck at multitasking while on the road.  Clearly, other people in America don’t.

There are already laws in place in many places (including DC) that make it illegal to talk on the phone while driving, based on these statistics textingshould be made illegal as well.  The thought of a 16 year-old new driver on the road is scary; a 16 year-old new driver on the road with 3 passengers in frightening; but a 16  year-old with passengers who is texting while driving (yes this does happen!) is a menace to society – and one none of us should have to share the road with.
