Internet Freebies

April 14, 2009

I read a very interesting piece in the LA Times last week on how long the internet can continue to be free.  David Lazarus notes all the *free* items on the internet we all take for granted – email, Google documents, photo albums, networking (the beloved Facebook!), and even services like this blog – many not be free forever.

Older generations remember the days when a movie cost 10 cents, not $10 like today.  Will we in time come to say “I remember when email service was free” and younger generations will say “Whoa!  That’s crazy!”?  Its true that these free sites provide a tremendous service.  Email is what keeps us connected, and for many Facebook is a way to literally connect with friends and classmates who we have fallen out of touch with.

The question then is, how much will we be willing to pay?  I don’t have an answer for that, though Kobe Bryant thinks you should pay $49.95 to have access to his website.
