Hang tough, don’t puff?

April 2, 2009

Today the House of Representatives passed new legislation placing tobacco under the scrutiny of the Food and Drug Administration.  While I like the concept of cigarettes being held under a Federal microscope, I can’t help but wonder if this measure will actually be effective.

In recent years the FDA has done a less than stellar job protecting American’s from harmful foods, and has stalled and politicized the release of some prescription drugs.   They also voted that the known toxin bisphenol A was still safe to use in plastic products that Americans use to feed their families with every day despite the product being banned in Europe and Canada.  Given the FDA’s recent past, I don’t have a lot of faith that they will be able to effectively regulate tobacco in a timely manner.  But hey, this is a new administration and they could prove me wrong.
